DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: General strike against neoliberal policies

On November 11, the people of the Dominican Republic staged a 24-hour general strike in protest at the government's neoliberal policies. Ten people were killed by police, 60 wounded and more than 1000 detained.

Narciso Isa Conde, spokesperson for Force of the Revolution, which is part of the National Popular Organisations Collective that called the strike, told the US Workers World socialist newspaper that it was a continuation of two national days of protest in July and August.

Conde said the strike was against the Dominican Republic government's impending agreement with the International Monetary Fund, rising prices and low wages, high unemployment and the privatisation of public utilities. Striker have given the President until December 11 to change government policies.
