AMEC workers victory

MELBOURNE — Workers employed by AMEC, the company contracted to install new generators at the Carrum Downs water treatment plant, are back at work. They won the reinstatement of eight workers, including the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union shop stewards, who had been sacked the day before the start of the Christmas holidays. The workers had picketed the plant for three weeks starting on January 15.

MP's office target of student occupation

ADELAIDE — On February 18, students staged a brief occupation of the office of Liberal MP Trish Worth, federal member for Adelaide, as part of a protest organised by the National Union of Students South Australian branch against the Crossroads Review of Higher Education.

About 30 students maintained the occupation for around 15 minutes before being removed by police. Not to be deterred, students then gathered outside the entrance to Worth's office, chanting "No ifs, no buts, no fees, no cuts!" and "What do we want? Books not bombs! When do we want it? Now!" before marching to the offices of Senator Amanda Vanstone.
