ATTAC Australia launched
BY IGGY KIM
SYDNEY — More than 100 people attended the launch of ATTAC (Action for a Tobin Tax to Assist the Citizen) Australia on April 9 at the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. The Tobin Tax is a 1% levy on all international currency transactions aimed at wealth redistribution and reducing currency speculation.
ATTAC is an international organisation, founded in France in 1998, which has more than 80,000 members in 33 countries. ATTAC's other aims are: democracy and transparency in international institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organisation; the cancellation of Third World debt; the outlawing of tax havens; and state control of pension and superannuation funds.
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle, James Arvanitakis of the Research Initiative on International Activism, Julian Disney of the University of NSW's Social Justice Program and Chris Dubrow of ATTAC Australia spoke.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
