Dancing and dining for global justice

SYDNEY — Supporters of Green Left Weekly packed into the Fairfield Community Centre on May 17, to enjoy a night of music, good food and fabulous company while raising much needed funds for the paper.

Activists from anti-war, feminist, refugees' rights and other progressive campaigns mingled and danced in the relaxed atmosphere. A performance of flamenco dancing was warmly applauded.

The diners also heard short greetings from Books Not Bombs' Lindsay Rowan and the Socialist Alliance's Raul Bassi.

Bassi brought a brief somber note to the evening, reminding many why campaigning newspapers like Green Left Weekly are so important, when he explained that access to the Bankstown Resistance Centre was blocked that morning because a local homeless man had been burned to death in the arcade housing the centre.

"How many houses and apartments are vacant nearby?", he asked passionately. "We must continue to fight to protect everybody in this society."
