Evolve wins low-key elections

CANBERRA — In a low-key Australian National University Students Association
(ANUSA) elections, held September 9-12, the Evolve ticket won all executive
positions, National Union of Students (NUS) delegate positions and many
general representative positions.

Evolve was put together by the Independent faction, which has dominated
the ANUSA in recent years. This year, the Indies have mobilised to prevent
a student general meeting from donating money to the Refugee Action Committee
or holding a referendum to have the campus declared a refugee safe haven.
The remnants of the Left Labor Club also operated through Evolve.

The Free the Refugees ticket's Brett Muller, running on a pro-refugee,
anti-war platform, won a general representative position.

Apathy Sux, a loose alliance of students from the Environment Collective
and left groups, also picked up one general representative position. Socialist
Alternative activist Jo Mettam, running for Apathy Sux, missed out on a
NUS delegate position by just four votes.
