Help free the refugees

Wednesday, April 25, 2001 - 10:00

A national day of action to free the refugees has been called for June
3. It has been endorsed by the ACTU, the Victorian Trades Hall Council
and refugee rights campaign groups around the country and is calling for
the closure of the detention centres.

Help is needed to organise and build this national day of action. You
can help by publicising the event as broadly as possible: at your school,
university or workplace, in your neighbourhood, amongst family and friends.

You can also help by getting endorsement from organisations like unions,
churches, ethnic communities and student organisations.

There are local campaign committees which have been working tirelessly,
organising public meetings, pickets and actions. The Melbourne Refugee
Action Collective has initiated a weekly picket at Maribyrnong detention
centre with the support of a broad range of community groups. The Perth
committee will be organising a city rally followed by a convoy to the detention
centre at Perth airport for the national day of action.

Melbourne RAC is organising a statement that will be printed in the
Australian. You can put your name to this, or get support from a
community organisation for the statement. Contact them via their web-site:

The Free the Refugees Campaign in western Sydney West has set up a national
email group, which it hopes will be a constant source of information about
the latest issues in Australia and around the world. It also carries all
the details of upcoming actions. To join the egroup, send an email to <Free-the-Refugees-Campaign-subscribe@egroups.com>.

Support the activities of the refugee rights campaign groups and get
involved in the campaign. Contact your local Resistance Centre to find
out how to get in touch with the refugee rights campaign.
