M1 assessed
BRISBANE — Fifty people packed the Resistance Centre on May 5 to hear speakers on the M1 (May 1) blockades of Australian stock exchanges and the next step for the anti-corporate globalisation campaign.
Tim Stewart from the M1 Alliance noted that the size of the national M1 mobilisations equalled the September 11-13 convergence outside the World Economic Forum in Melbourne. Katelyn Mountford from Resistance discussed the recent anti-Free Trade of the America's protest in Quebec.
Mike Byrne from the Democratic Socialist Party spoke about the protests planned for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Brisbane in October. He urged that demands for the cancellation of the Third World debt and that governments boycott the next round of WTO talks in Qatar be raised.
Canberra celebrates Che
CANBERRA — People around the world are still attracted to Che Guevara's dedication to the struggle for justice. That was the message of a May 3 forum, organised by the Democratic Socialist Party and Resistance.
Thirty-five people, most under 20, packed the Resistance Centre to discuss the relevance to the movement for global justice of Che Guevara's revolutionary activities and ideas.
Bay of Pigs celebration
SYDNEY — More than 100 people packed the Newtown Edge Theatre on April 21 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Cuba's victory over the US-backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs. A lively audience celebrated the achievements of the Cuban revolution with a night of song and prose and reflection of the sacrifices of Cuba's young revolutionary heroes.
