Nike pickets in Sydney
BY MARIA VOUKELATOS
SYDNEY — "What's disgusting? Union busting! What's outrageous? Sweatshop wages!", has been one of the lively chants ringing outside Nike's main Sydney store on George Street every Friday night.
The Sydney pickets are inspired by the successful anti-sweatshop protests in Melbourne outside the Nike superstore in Swanston Street. They demand that Nike:
- Sign the Homeworkers Code of Practice;
- Pay their workers in Australia award wages and a living wage throughout the world and adhere to health and safety regulations;
- Recognise the right of their workers to organise in unions at their workplace; and
- End exploitative and dangerous work practices.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
John Pilger
