Movie: Land and Freedom (1996) — Socialist director Ken Loach's marvellous film about the Spanish Civil War tells the story of David, young and unemployed, who leaves Liverpool to join an international brigade of the republican militia to fight against Franco's fascists. David and his comrades' experiences at the front and in Barcelona are shaped by the Spanish workers and peasants' courageous struggle for land and freedom, and their betrayal by the Stalinist Spanish Communist Party. ABC TV, Tuesday, March 20, 11pm.
100 Years: the Australian Story — Rise and Fall of White Australia — The first major legislation passed by the new federal parliament in 1901 was the Immigration Restriction Act, or the White Australia Policy as it was better known. It took 60 years before this policy was officially replaced. ABC-TV, Wednesday, March 21, 8.30pm.
