Song for Reconciliation

SYDNEY — "Songs get through to people's soul", Aboriginal singer Betty Little said, explaining why her music is a powerful tool for building bridges of understanding between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.

Little will be one of the feature performers at an Aboriginal Culture Awareness Day festival in Sydney's inner western suburbs on May 20.

According to the Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation Lowe Action Group, which is organising the event, it will try to "bring together black and white Australians in a day of celebration and reconciliation". Residents will also have the opportunity to discover historic sites, tracing the daily life of the inner west's original indigenous inhabitants.

An Aboriginal heritage walk, led by Allen Madden from the Metropolitan Aboriginal Lands Council, will take place from 8-10am. The Aboriginal Culture Awareness Day will be held afterwards at Concord Community Centre, Gipps Street (between Burwood Road and Loftus Street), Concord, 10am-4pm.
