Wollongong students say no to internet fees

WOLLONGONG — In the second such demonstration in a week, 100 Wollongong University students marched on the administration offices on May 24 to demand progress on a log of claims and guarantees that the university will not allow fees to be imposed for internet usage.

Eighty students had staged a similar march on May 17 to lodge the log of claims, which includes caps on tutorial sizes of 15 and increases in teaching, administration and general staff.

University vice-chancellor Gerard Sutton promised the May 24 protest that there would be a consultative process before any internet fee are charged but that the final decision would rest with the university council.

His promise did not go over well with the students, who charge that the council is entirely unrepresentative of the university community; only three of its positions are elected and only one is reserved for a current student.

Dissatisfied, students voted to continue their campaign and will meet again on May 30 to set further plans. Students interested in becoming involved in the campaign can phone John Finlayson at the Student Representative Council on 4221 4201 or Chris Latham at the Resistance Centre on 4226 2010.
