The Diplomat
The Diplomat
Gil Scrine Films, in association with Film Australia and Emerald Films, presents The Diplomat, a film which follows East Timor's Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos Horta in the final, tumultuous stages of his 24 years roving the world as ambassador for peace and freedom in East Timor.
"[The film-makers] could not have anticipated the dramatic events that shape and energize their film. The result is a gripping documentary ... almost too short for its powerful and involving subject matter", said David Stratton in the June 19 Variety. The Diplomat was voted "Best documentary" at the Sydney Film Festival 2000.
Screenings start in Sydney on August 17 at the Valhalla Cinema, Glebe Point Road, and the Chauvel Cinema, Paddington Town Hall, for a limited season.
Other screenings to follow: Melbourne, to be announced; Darwin, Deckchair, early October; Lismore, North Coast Camera, August 25; Byron Bay, Underground, August 26; Perth, FTI Fremantle, September 1-9; Cairns, Cairns TAFE, early October; Adelaide, Mercury, October 5-8; Brisbane, Schonell, early October; Canberra, Electric Shadows, late November-December; Wollongong, Wollongong University, August 18; Frankston, East Timor Support Group, September. Showings in Castlemaine and Alice Springs are also possible.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
