Women in revolutionary movements

ADELAIDE — Inspired by International Women's Day, women members of Committees in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean organised an event on April 9 on the topic of women in revolutionary movements in Latin America.

After a superb dinner, Monica Chiappe gave a talk and showed a video, Las Siempre Olvidadas, on women from Chiapas, Mexico, who are involved in the Zapatista revolutionary movement.

This was followed by a lively discussion covering a range of topics, including the history of the oppression of women, reform and revolution, domestic violence, world politics, cuts in women's services, the importance of marching on IWD, patriarchy, hierarchy and the church.

The women were particularly impressed by the more than 5000 indigenous Chiapas women who marched in IWD this year.

All the participants were enthusiastic about meeting again in the near future. Money raised will go to support the AnaClara Women's Organisation in Chile.
