NSW councils to oppose reactor and waste dump

The campaign against the federal government's plan for a new nuclear reactor in the southern Sydney suburb of Lucas Heights has received a boost. The annual Local Government Association (LGA) conference in Dubbo November 6-10 voted to oppose both the reactor and the proposed waste dump in South Australia.

The conference called on the government to redirect funding earmarked for the reactor to alternative medical technologies and research into improving the management and safe disposal of nuclear waste. It also opposed the transportation of nuclear waste without the consent of local government authorities.

The LGA executive was directed to write to all local government authorities in NSW recommending that they join or rejoin the Nuclear Free Zones secretariat and become active in the campaign to stop the new reactor and waste dump.
