Anti-war protests continue

A small but lively protest was held in Brisbane on February 27 to demand the withdrawal of all Australian and US troops from the Persian Gulf.

The protest also called for all sanctions against the Iraqi people to be lifted immediately and for Israel to be held to account for its flaunting of UN resolutions.

The protest was addressed by speakers from the Australian Democrats, Labor Party, Radio 4ZZZ, the Democratic Socialist Party and the International Socialist Organisation. All speakers agreed that the agreement negotiated by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had brought the situation back from the brink of war, but that peace could return only when all foreign troops are withdrawn and the sanctions are lifted.

Graham Matthews, speaking on behalf of the Gulf Action Coalition, reminded everyone to rally in the Queen Street Mall at 5pm should the US begin bombing.

From Sydney, Jenny Long reports that 50 people gathered in Town Hall Square on February 28 to also call for the withdrawal of Australian and US troops and the lifting of sanctions.

The Sydney Coalition to Stop the Gulf War has called a demonstration at 5pm outside the US consulate in Sydney's Martin Place, should Iraq be bombed.
