Anti-war actions continue

CANBERRA — On March 7, 100 people protested outside Parliament House against the continued presence of US and Australian military forces in the Persian Gulf, and for an end to sanctions on Iraq.

Speakers included representatives from Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons, the Democratic Socialist Party (DSP), Canberra Program for Peace, Resistance and the International Socialist Organisation. Following the rally, protesters marched to the US embassy.

On March 6, 30 people attended a meeting, organised by the DSP and Resistance, with Ali Kazak, the Australian representative of the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Kazak described the situation in Palestine, which the US-backed Israeli state continues to occupy, and said the latest aggression against Iraq is aimed at asserting US dominance in the region.

In Adelaide on February 27, workers in the federal defence minister Ian McLaughlin's office were greeted by a picket of Resistance activists distributing information about the need to lift the sanctions against Iraq.

On February 28, the Gulf Peace Action Committee held a protest, attended by 60 people, on the steps of state Parliament House.
