Iranian activists commemorate women

PARRAMATTA — About 60 people attended a film night organised by the Association of Iranian Political Prisoners (AIPP) in exile held at the Parramatta Migrant Resource Centre, western Sydney on March 8. The event was held to commemorate International Women's Day and publicise the plight of political prisoners, especially women, in Iran

Two films were shown. The first was a drama made by Iranian exiles in Europe depicting the daily humiliations endured by Iranian working women. The second, smuggled out of Iran by underground activists, showed the gruesome public stoning of two women accused of adultery. Under the Tehran government's strict theocracy, violations of the Islamic code of conduct are punishable by public floggings and stoning to death. The AIPP stressed that such punishments are frequent in Iran.

The AIPP read a declaration honouring the continuing struggle of Iranian women for political and social emancipation, and calling on all concerned organisations and activists to support the unconditional, immediate release of tens of thousands of political prisoners in Iran.
