Mindarie sacred sites threatened

PERTH — Aboriginal people are opposed to a new land fill dump at Mindarie which has threatened to disturb sacred sites. They say that the site contains a burial mound and Dreamtime tracks of the Wagyl (sacred dreaming serpent).

The first stage of the dump has been completed. Aboriginal leaders Robert Bropho, Clarrie Isaacs and Toopy Bodney have fought through court action against the three local councils allowing the development.

However, they were unable to obtain the money needed to continue legal action.

Clarrie Isaacs welcomed a proposal by Stirling City Council supporting an inquiry aimed at finding what Aboriginal sites were threatened by the dump.

Perth City Council has also supported an anthropological assessment of the site and said it would pay a third of the cost.
