Kerry Browning

In October 1988, Kerry Browning was arrested and charged with bombing cars from the South African and US embassies in Canberra. Despite the devotion of massive resources by the police and ASIO, they have still to come up with any serious evidence linking Kerry with the bombings. It has not been decided whether she will have to stand trial, but she is still bound to bail conditions which include a curfew. Kerry has a long history of activism, particularly in the anti-apartheid movement. She is currently a member of the Azania Support Group.

Kerry says she has been strongly influenced by the women's wing of the Pan Africanist Congress, which maintains that "national liberation comes first but it must go hand in hand with women's liberation.

"The crucial thing about feminism is freedom to choose. We don't have that under capitalism. We still don't have access to jobs or child-care that is affordable.

"If a woman chooses to be an activist, she takes on a lot of extra work, especially in my case of being a single working mother. Support from other women is crucial."
