Netherlands meeting launches Indonesia solidarity group

AMSTERDAM — Just hours before the resignation of Suharto was announced, 130 people attended a public meeting on May 20 about the crisis in Indonesia in Utrecht, just south of Amsterdam.

The meeting was addressed by Nico Warouw, European representative of the People's Democratic Party; Max Lane from the Democratic Socialist Party and Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor in Australia; and Martin Broek, a Dutch expert on that government's military aid to Indonesia from AMOK.

The meeting, which was organised by a range of left groups, including the Socialist Workers Party in the Netherlands, Rebel, RISK and the Studenten Solidariteit Indonesië, launched a Indonesia solidarity student organisation, generating a large response from those who attended.
