Vigils against N-weapons

CANBERRA — The embassies and high commissions of the eight countries that have tested nuclear weapons or are known to possess them have been targeted by vigils here. The vigils are organised by a coalition of local peace groups.

Organisers called for a series of "silent, meditative vigils" at lunchtimes and in the evenings. A letter has been sent to the government of each country asking it to commit to the total abolition of all nuclear weapons; the peaceful resolution of all future disputes; and meeting the basic needs of all Earth's people.

The first vigils were held outside Pakistan's diplomatic residence on June 15. Vigils have also been held outside the embassies and high commissions of China (June 16), India (June 17), France (June 18), Britain (June 22), and Russia (June 23).

Vigils will be held at: US embassy, 21 Moonah Place, Yarralumla, on June 24, 6.30pm, and July 8, noon; Israeli embassy, 6 Turrana St, Yarralumla, on June 25, 6.30pm, and July 9, 6.30pm; Pakistan high commission, 4 Timbarra Crescent, O'Malley, on June 29, 6:30pm; Chinese embassy, 15 Coronation Drive, Yarralumla, on June 30, noon; Indian high commission, 3 Moonah Place, Yarralumla, on July 1, noon; French embassy, 6 Perth Ave, Yarralumla, on July 2, 6.30pm; British high commission, Commonwealth Ave, Yarralumla, July 6, 6.30pm; and at the Russian embassy, 5 Arkana St, Yarralumla, on July 7, noon.
