Protest against Burnie mill closure

ROSEBERY — On the morning of June 15, around 1000 people gathered in Civic Square to protest against the proposed closure of the Burnie pulp mill, which will mean up to 280 job losses. The march, led by four mill workers carrying a black coffin with the slogan "Herein lies Burnie" and a lone piper, stretched for two blocks, bringing the city centre to a halt.

Speakers included union organisers, politicians and Burnie Mayor Steven Kons, who expressed the council's full support for the pulp mill workers.

It was unanimously resolved that the community meet with mill owner Amcor and demand that it reverse its decision to close the mill, and that the Tasmanian community and state and federal governments join in a tripartite negotiation to stop the planned sackings and fast-track industry that can process the mill's products.

Tasmanian Premier Tony Rundle said he would offer the company cheaper power and woodchips if the mill stayed open.
