SYDNEY — East Timor solidarity activist Shirley Shackleton will be speaking at a dinner on October 15 marking the 20th anniversary of the murder of her husband and four other Australian journalists by the Indonesian army in Balibo, East Timor. On the same night, at a benefit organised by the Australian East Timor Association, East Timorese women who participated in the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing will report. A performer with the band Painters and Dockers, Paul Stewart, whose brother was another of the journalists killed, will also be present. On October 16, Shirley Shackleton will help launch a report on East Timor prepared for the British Parliamentary Human Rights Committee. In the evening, a seminar "The Death of Truth in East Timor: Remembering Balibo" will be held. These events are organised by the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism. (Details for all events are in Meetings ... Parties ... Anything ... pp. 22-23.)
