Indonesian consulate picketed
SYDNEY — Supporters of the struggle for democracy in Indonesia picketed the Indonesian consulate in Maroubra on November 18. Protest organisers from Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET) and Warung Nusantara condemned the crackdown in Indonesia that has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 people and serious injuries to hundreds. The protesters demanded the resignation of President B.J. Habibie and General Wiranto. Other demands included the end to the military's involvement in politics, freedom for all political prisoners and the trial of Suharto for corruption and crimes against humanity. The protesters pledged to step up pressure on the Australian government to break all ties with the Habibie-Wiranto military regime.
