Greens stand for Yabsley's seat
SYDNEY — The Eastern Suburbs Greens have preselected Geoff Ash as their candidate for the seat of Vaucluse in the upcoming state election.
Ash stood as the Greens' candidate for Wentworth in the February 1990 federal election, receiving 9.2% of the primary vote.
A Green MLA from Vaucluse, Ash said, "would be a force for improving the whole environment and quality of life in New South Wales. We need legislators who will not only fight for cleaning up the state's beaches but will also take on the daunting task of cleaning up our social environment.
"The biggest growth industry in the state at present seems to be prison construction.
"In place of the present government's efforts to solve economic and social problems by jailing more and more people, Greens favour providing socially useful jobs cleaning up the environmental mess that has been left us by both Coalition and Labor governments."
Ash said that the present member for Vaucluse, "minister for dungeons Michael Yabsley, is the chief spokesperson for a policy that didn't work in the 18th century, and certainly won't work in the 20th or 21st. Replacing him with a Green in Parliament would be a good way to start making our natural and social environment into what they can and should be."
An important issue in the campaign, Ash believes, will be the lack of integrity and vision of the major parties. The Greens' platform will be based on four principles: an ecologically sustainable economy; economic and social justice; grassroots democracy; and disarmament and non-violence.
The Eastern Suburbs Greens can be contacted at PO Box 770, Double Bay 2028.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
