A former Nicaraguan contra leader accused two government
ministers of drug trafficking on April 13. The ex-contra claims that development minister Brooklyn Rivera and fisheries minister Javier Morales have been helping the Medellin and Cali drug cartels ship narcotics from Colombia and Mexico to the United States via Nicaragua.
Nicaragua's consul in Miami has resigned following allegations of drug smuggling. Adolfo Chamorro, the nephew of Nicaraguan President Violeta Chamorro, was accused by the Miami Herald of shipping more than a ton of cocaine into Florida while he was a member of a US-backed guerilla organisation.
