BRISBANE — More than 50 people attended a forum titled "What Alternative for Latin America?" at the Resistance Centre on May 17. Keynote speaker Stephen O'Brien, who has recently returned from four years working with popular movements in Nicaragua, described the emerging groups struggling against the neo-liberal policies being pushed by the US. Manoli Orellana from the National Union of Guatemalan Women spoke about the effect of the recent peace accords on the progressive movements in the area. Other speakers included Mercedes Sepulveda (pictured) from the Latin American Women's Support Group, Rafael Pacheco from Australia Aid for El Salvador, Sue Monk from the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society and Naomi Mudge from the Brisbane Zapatista Front. Jumping Fences entertained the crowd with Cuban folk music.
