Call to cancel African debt
Black Americans have called on Western creditors, particularly the US, to cancel Africa's $100 billion debt.
A joint statement last month by African heads of state and black American leaders, meeting on the Ivory Coast, stresses that if Washington was able to cancel Egypt's and Poland's foreign debts, it can also do the same for the African nations.
The Reverend Leon Sullivan said that the 35 million-strong black community in the US pays $70 billion in taxes and therefore has the right to demand that the government ease Africa's debt. At the meeting the creation of an African/American Reconstruction Bank was suggested to help the African nations. — World Perspectives
