Refugee women's art exhibition

MELBOURNE — Romanian Simona Jobbagy was one of several women artists who participated in the second exhibition of refugee women's art organised by the Foundation for the Survivors of Torture in Melbourne Town Hall on April 22-26.

She came from Romania four years ago and does textiles, mixed media and tapestry.

Exhibition organiser and artist Kitty Owen told Green Left Weekly that the idea of the exhibition was to allow the refugee women artists to display and sell their work, obtain access to the art industry and publicise the plight of refugees.

The work of women from 18 nationalities — including Kurdish, Turkish and Latin American artists — was exhibited and a lot of it was sold, she said.
