Australians for Native Title launched

ADELAIDE — Around 300 people attended the launch of Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation on July 10.

After rock band Coloured Stone opened proceedings, the audience heard Sandra Saunders, ATSIC SA regional councillor, speak about the "orchestrated campaign to undermine Aboriginal rights". She compared the attitude of the federal government to that of the original British invaders.

Noel Pearson, chair of the Cape York Land Council, said that Howard's 10-point plan would unravel a rare opportunity for genuine reconciliation.

Former ATSIC chairperson Lois O'Donoghue explained that the Mabo and Wik decisions were not radical, merely clarifying the legal status of Aboriginal people in certain circumstances.

Former SA Labor premier Don Dunstan and Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith also spoke.

In Brisbane, around 100 people attended the launch of ANTR on July 9.

"Pauline Hanson has helped reveal the truth: Australia is a racist society. But with your help, we can fight against that racism", Aboriginal leader Merv Riley told the meeting. Jeannie Bell and Victor Hart also spoke.

ANTR spokesperson Carol Booth outlined future activities, including the proposal for a national day of action for native title on August 31.
