Salvadoran seeks aid for peace
SYDNEY — "The current phase of negotiations demands international solidarity if we are to reach a cease-fire", Commander Nidia Díaz, a member of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front's Political-Diplomatic Commission and member of that party's Negotiation Commission, told a packed dinner here on May 3. Nidia Díaz is in Australia seeking political and material support for the FMLN and its attempts to set up a new popular economic and social model. In the course of the 10-year civil war, more than 65,000 people have died, many more have been left homeless and the ecology has been devastated. According to Díaz, some progress was made in the April round of UN-supervised talks in Mexico. But, she warned, "while the Cristiani government continues only to give out crumbs, the armed struggle is a necessity". Photo by David Brazil.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
