Surfrider plans campaigns

HOBART — On September 2, the Surfrider Foundation had its first meeting for this year. The group campaigns against the pollution of Tasmania's rivers and oceans.

Michael Paxton, Tasmania's NUS environment officer, called the meeting. He told Green Left Weekly that Surfrider projects will include a relaunching of the campaign against Pasminco EZ's pollution, dune rehabilitation management plans, art exhibitions and benefit gigs.

In August EZ had a spill of two tonnes of hydrochloric acid into the ocean, which was dismissed as having negligible effect on the environment.

EZ's license to pollute expires at the end of 1997. Paxton says, "It's just not good enough for us to let them have their way until 1997. They won't be dumping any more, but they still have pollution coming from the factory in the day to day processes.."
