'Rally Against Racism' in Sydney

Sydney's Campaign Against Racism coalition decided at its meeting on November 8 to organise a "Rally Against Racism" on November 23 as part of the national day of action called by the Brisbane Anti-Racism Campaign. The Sydney coalition's decision follows successful anti-racism speak-outs earlier this month in the city centre and Penrith in Sydney's western suburbs.

Liam Mitchell reports that the Sydney coalition includes representatives from trade unions and Aboriginal, migrant and political organisations. The November 23 rally has been endorsed by a wide range of community groups.

The rally aims to draw together people from the large number of communities that suffer racist discrimination, and to provide an opportunity for people to voice their opposition to the government's cutbacks to migrant and Aboriginal services.

The demands of the rally include: justice and land rights for Aboriginal people, reconciliation, no cuts to immigration, no deportation of refugees, and an end to all forms of racial discrimination.

The rally will meet at 12.30pm on November 23 at Town Hall Square, marching via John Howard's city office to Circular Quay for speeches and entertainment. For more information, telephone (02) 9690 1977.
