4000 Indonesian workers and students rally

On the morning of March 27, more than 4000 workers from the Barindo, Daimaster and Nesiyo companies, joined by students from the People's Democratic Union (PRD), marched to the Jatim local parliament in East Java.

They were demanding that two worker activists abducted by the authorities be released.

The march began at 8.30am and reached the parliament at around 11am. PRD activists acted as marshals, and demonstrators distributed leaflets to onlookers. Security forces were already stationed at the parliament when they arrived.

The protest follows three days of strike action. According to a worker representative, since the workers' abduction on the first day of the strike, there had been no news of them. The representative added that the action at the parliament had been planned prior to the abductions, but now the workers have vowed to continue the strike action indefinitely.
