Anti-uranium alliance formed

SYDNEY — On April 12, more than 20 people representing a range of organisations met to organise anti-uranium mining campaign activities in Sydney.

The group planned a protest action to be held outside the Energy Resources Australia office on April 26, the 10th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and also began preparations for the national day of action against uranium mining on May 24.

An alliance called Stop Uranium Mining was formed at the meeting. Participants include the Democratic Socialist Party, People for Nuclear Disarmament, Friends of the Earth, the Greens, Resistance, International Socialist Organisation, National Union of Students, Labor Against Uranium, Sydney Peace Squadron, Left Alliance and the University of NSW Student Guild.

The April 12 meeting followed a protest on April 4, when around 50 people gathered outside the ERA office here to condemn the company's decision to open a new uranium mine in Kakadu. That protest was jointly organised by Resistance and the Democratic Socialist Party.

High school students from MacDonald College performed street theatre before the protesters attempted to enter the building.
