Plans to break Maritime Union

SYDNEY — The Australian newspaper on April 27 carried advertisements for waterfront workers. These workers are part of the federal government's plan to break the Maritime Union of Australia by encouraging new stevedoring companies to set up with non-union labour or to start a company "union".

Robert Coombs, MUA NSW branch joint secretary, said that "The union will be fighting any attempts to use this scab labour". The MUA has had discussions with all members on the waterfront and with other unions which also cover the waterfront to organise a united fight back.

The Maritime Defence Committee, an alliance of groups and individuals aiming to help defend the rights of waterfront workers and seafarers, is organising for rallies and public meetings against the anti-union attacks of the government.
