BRISBANE — The second annual Lesbian and Gay Pride Festival has drawn large crowds. Events so far have included a photographic exhibition, film festival, two cafe discussion nights entitled "Hot Issues with Hot Coffee", a quiz night, comic Sue-Anne Post from Melbourne and the 30th Annual Queens Birthday Ball. Still to come are the rally, march and fair, the Pride Dance Party, a "hypothetical" on anti-discrimination legislation, an art exhibition, a night of reading by lesbian and gay writers, bowling, roller skating, cricket and pool competitions and a day of lesbian and gay radio on 4ZZZ to commemorate Stonewall Day, June 28.
MELBOURNE — The Coalition Against NEWSTART-AES is planning a City Square rally for July 26 to oppose the Hawke government's new unemployment scheme and to call for a real program of job creation. Activists say the new rules introduce a form of work for the dole, which ties in with a government-business drive to force down wages. The coalition unites activists and groups including the Unemployed Workers' Union, public sector and social workers' union members, community legal workers and welfare groups such as the Brotherhood of St Laurence. For further information phone Andrew on 429 3290 or 329 1277 or Ian on 387 6854.
PERTH — At the June 14 formal opening of the new, $31 million Midlands college of TAFE, about 40 students protested over proposed cuts to staffing and courses. Federal education minister John Dawkins met with students to hear their grievances but said little to allay their fears. Student spokesperson Tracey Hodgkins said many students had felt victimised, particularly by senior TAFE administrators, and are resolved to continue their campaign.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
