Posters outlawed

PERTH — Changes to the state Litter Act made on July 21 mean that individuals, companies and organisations that arrange for people to put up posters will face fines of up to $10,000.

While it is difficult to prove a particular group guilty, councils have warned that any organisation distributing the posters will be fined. Individuals putting up posters will also incur a $1000 fine.

This legislation will seriously effect the ability of activist groups and local bands to advertise events. The socialist youth organisation Resistance has been receiving warnings by councils since January. Well-known organisations are likely to be targeted.

Not everyone can afford to hire billboards (these remain legal), or advertise on television, radio or the mainstream media. Young people especially rely on posters for political and cultural information.
