Hiroshima Day marked
Around 300 people attended the Sydney Hiroshima Day march on August 4, demanding that a treaty be signed by the year 2000 to begin the process of eliminating nuclear weapons. Speakers called on the Australian government to support the abolition of nuclear weapons and end the mining and export of uranium. Local band Insurge and songwriter Peter Hicks entertained the crowd. In Brisbane, a candlelight procession was held on August 6. At a rally afterwards the Australian government was condemned for a proposal to export uranium to Indonesia for nuclear power plants in the earthquake-prone region of Java. The Coalition Against the Mining and Export of Uranium is discussing further actions to protest Australia's role in the nuclear cycle. Photo of the Sydney march by Liam Mitchell.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
