Kurds on hunger strike
Kurds on hunger strike
By Susan Phillips
MELBOURNE — Thirteen members of the Kurdish community have been on hunger strike here since August 1, to protest against the genocidal policies of the Turkish government in Kurdistan.
The action is part of an international campaign in support of 10,000 Kurdish prisoners of war, who are on a hunger strike in Turkey.
The hunger strikers are camped out in City Square. According to spokesperson Hidir Yildiz, they aim "to appeal to the Australian public, charity and community organisations, the Australian government, trade unions and progressive supporters to assist.
"We would appreciate any efforts to stop the genocide taking place in Kurdistan, to support the self-determination of Kurdish people, to protect our human rights and to demand the recognition of our culture and language."
Members of the public are encouraged to visit the hunger strikers and show their support.

By now we all know that the rich get richer under capitalism. But many are astounded at the incredible pace this takes place.
"Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
