Anti-nuke yacht prepares for Moruroa

DARWIN — The cancellation of the parliamentarians' flotilla to Moruroa has not stopped people's campaigns to support yachts wishing to join the Rainbow Warrior in the Pacific. Activists in ENUFF (Everyone for a Nuclear Free Future) are raising funds to send the protest vessel Genebelle. Conrad and Mary Geyer, originally from South Africa, will crew the yacht along with ENUFF activist Mark Oakwood.

The Geyers spent last year living and travelling through the islands surrounding Moruroa before docking here in May. "We saw news of the Rainbow Warrior, and we'd been talking about the nuclear testing ... and realised that this was our chance to sail over too. That's when we got in touch with ENUFF to help raise money for the trip", said Mary.

ENUFF has been running information and fundraising stalls at the popular Mindle Beach markets. Conrad said that many people had helped prepare flags which, for $30, will carry someone's anti-nuke message on Genebelle's rigging. Only three ALP and CLP parliamentarians have purchased a flag.

The Geyers have received some support — food and spare parts — from local businesses, but nothing from the multinationals.
