Road Traffic Authority planning changes for King Street, Newtown
SYDNEY — The Road Traffic Authority is planning to make changes to the current traffic rules for King Street, Newtown, which increase the volume and speed of traffic and kill the small businesses and atmosphere of the area. More than 100 people attended a June 25 protest meeting organised by the Newtown Chamber of Commerce and the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. While it was predominantly attended by people whose business interests would be affected, a local resident told the meeting that the RTA plans would turn King Street into another Parramatta Road — another solid wall of traffic and fumes which Sydney can do without. "Without Green Left Weekly, freedom of press and public truth-telling in Australia would be gravely ill."
