Washoe: The Monkey (sic) Who Communicates Through Sign Language — The story of Washoe, a chimp adopted by psychologists and taught sign language. Washoe's abilities have been at the centre of a long debate about the uniqueness of the human capacity for language. One hopes the show will not be a sensationalised "Believe-it-or-not" exercise, as its dreadfully unscientific title suggests. ABC TV, Sunday, October 1, 6pm.

State of the Ark — The great debate about the role of the zoo in the modern world continues. In this episode we see Bucharest Zoo in Romania and Yerevan Zoo in Armenia, both trapped in a 40-year-old timewarp. SBS, Sunday, October 1, 7.30pm.

Movie: A Time for Witches (1993) — Andrzej and Jola, both HIV-positive, who live on the streets of Warsaw supporting their drug habits by prostitution, find their lives intertwined with a priest who runs a house for people with AIDs. SBS, Sunday, October 1, 9.30pm.

Shimmer in the city — A program which breaks down the stereotypes associated with urban Aboriginal art and highlights its difference from traditional indigenous art. SBS, Monday, October 2, 8.30pm.

In conversation with Edward Said — Said is one of the leading dissident intellectuals of our time. He has written widely on literature, music, history and Palestinian politics. Two of his books — Orientalism and Culture and Imperialism are best-sellers. SBS, Monday, October 2, 11pm.
