*International actions against gender violence

Tuesday, October 24, 1995 - 10:00

The Center for Women's Global Leadership has called a "16 days of activism against gender violence" campaign, culminating in an International Day Against Violence Against Women on November 25. The first such campaign was held in 1991. The centre announced the campaign because, "Women have made important policy gains on violence against women and its intersections with health, economics, armed conflict and other issues at recent UN world conferences. This provides a critical opportunity to organise activities that will bring home the gains from Vienna, Cairo, Copenhagen and Beijing. It is now time to demand that our governments implement the commitments made to women's human rights." The campaign will overlap with December 6, the anniversary of the Montreal massacre when a man gunned down 14 women engineering students for being feminists. In order to coordinate events internationally, the Centre is asking that a description of activities be sent by October 31 to Mallika Dutt or Linda Posluszny, Fax 1 908 932 1180.
