Partial win on Qld compo

By Bill Mason BRISBANE — The Goss government is reported to be planning to partly meet union demands that new workers' compensation legislation continue to allow lump sum pay-outs for stress claims. Police, firefighters and state public servants had threatened industrial action if the lump sum provisions were removed. ACTU Queensland secretary John Thompson warned on October 27 that unions could reactivate a strike campaign if state cabinet outlawed stress related pay-outs. Employment Minister Wendy Edmond indicated on October 27 that the lump sum payments would be maintained when they related to "traumatic or critical incidents". Union leaders have responded that the government's proposed amendment still excludes situations that should not be overlooked.
