Enterprise bargaining on ANU in doubt

By Stuart Martin CANBERRA — Members of the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) won their dispute with the Australian National University chancellery, casting doubt on the future of enterprise bargaining on university campuses. On October 27, ANU vice-chancellor Deane Terrel accepted the NTEU's demand for an unconditional 2% pay increase from the university and 5.6% and 1.3% increases from the federal government. The Australian Manufacturing Workers' Union and the Health Services Union of Australia, which were previously demanding a 8% pay rise from the university, accepted the 2% offer. The 2% increase will be backdated to July but the ACTU is to negotiate the 5.6% and 1.3% increases with the federal Labor government. NTEU officials want cabinet to approve at least a 5.6% rise before the federal elections.
