Yevgeny Yevtushenko — Yevtushenko was born in 1933 in Siberia, the son of a geologist. His first book of poems appeared in 1952 and he has published a huge amount since. Yevtushenko has had a high political profile as a democratic socialist dissident in the USSR who remains a critical thinker today. ABC Radio National, Thursday, November 23, 9.30pm. Sex, Drugs, Blood and Death: Injecting Drugs and Prison — Many people in jail are injecting drug users. Unlike the gay community, they are disorganised and face great difficulty in lobbying governments to address their needs. This program looks at how the first — underground — needle exchange centre was set up to prevent the spread of AIDS. A visit is made to NSW's Long Bay Jail where the only unit in the world has been set up specifically for HIV+ prisoners.
