Wild rivers photo competition

The Australian Heritage Commission is running a photo competition on Australia's wild rivers. The event is part of a program to identify and conserve this increasingly rare part of our natural heritage. The competition runs until January 29 with prizes totalling more than $15,000. Launching the competition, the Australian Heritage Commission chair, Wendy McCarthy said, "Sadly over the last 200 years many of our rivers have been changed or damaged and there are very few we can still call wild". Currently there is no national inventory of rivers which remain essentially undisturbed — "wild". There is therefore no way of knowing which rivers might be under threat from proposed development or activity within its catchment area. Six categories of prizes will be awarded: for black and white, and colour photos from professionals, amateurs and under-18 photographers. The entries will also be exhibited and a "people's choice" award of photographic equipment given at the end of the exhibition.
