Public meeting: Council Meeting in Lilydale this Tuesday to demand an appeal to the Supreme Court to stop Maccas in the hills.
Tuesday, October 23
We need a crowd of people in the council chambers with placards demanding that the Council supports local democracy by launching this appeal. Even if an appeal is not launched on Tuesday we are laying the groundwork to pressure the newly elected council with a show of community pressure. The Shire of Yarra Ranges received over 1000 objections to the proposed McDonalds. They voted unanimously against the proposal. Yet VCAT dismissed the level of community opposition as a relevant factor when it approved the development. This is no just longer just a battle over a restaurant but one that raises the question of the whole integrity of Local Government. Do local communities and residents through their elected representative have the right to influence planning decisions or not? The No Maccas in the Hills campaign believe that we do and that the Shire of Yarra Ranges should fight for our rights through all available legal means by immediately launching an appeal to the Supreme Court. 7:30pm. Shire of Yarra Ranges Council Offices, Anderson St, Lilydale.

"Australia has the most restrictive media in the western world. Censorship by omission denies Australians their democratic right to make sense of whole stratas of political and foreign policy. That's why Green Left Weekly is a beacon, doing a job of honourable journalism, as an agent of people, not power."
