Theatre: 1938: An Opera.
Thursday, October 4-Saturday, October 13
An Authentic 2012 Re-enactment of the Authentic 1938 Re-enactment of the 1788 British Colonisation of Australia. On Australia Day in 1938, Australia's first major Aboriginal protest, the Day of Mourning took place against the backdrop of a jolly national celebration of 150 years of European colonisation. 1938: An Opera invents an alternative history where Aboriginal activist Marge Tucker teams up with Italian anarchists and Chinese communists to subvert a re-enactment of Governor Phillip's landing, incite revolution and expose the brutality behind the White Australia Policy, all while singing and dancing. An epic multicultural satire on nationalism and racism. 7:30pm. The Open Stage, University of Melbourne, 757 Swanston St, Parkville. $25/$15.

"Australia has the most restrictive media in the western world. Censorship by omission denies Australians their democratic right to make sense of whole stratas of political and foreign policy. That's why Green Left Weekly is a beacon, doing a job of honourable journalism, as an agent of people, not power."
